The Barbarian should not become more fragile, less accurate, or less relevant simply because the campaign reached double-digit levels. Our redesign is built around one idea: the longer you remain a Barbarian, the more physically impossible your character should become.
The 2014 problem: a great opening act
The 2014 Barbarian is immediately satisfying. Rage, Reckless Attack, resistance, a large hit die, and Extra Attack all communicate the fantasy clearly. The class becomes harder to justify later when its progression offers fewer transformative reasons to stay single-class while other classes continue adding broad new tools.
Our answer starts with defense
Gritty Defense makes Constitution a real defensive stat. While not wearing heavy armor, a Barbarian can use Constitution instead of Dexterity when calculating Armor Class. When unarmored, AC is 11 + Constitution modifier + proficiency bonus. Light and medium armor can also use Constitution in place of Dexterity for their modifier limit.
This is not just a number change. It lets the Barbarian actually build like the character fantasy suggests: Strength and Constitution first, without feeling punished for not also chasing Dexterity.
Strength should matter outside attack rolls
Physically Imposing grants Intimidation proficiency and allows Strength to replace Charisma for Intimidation checks. Indomitable Might later ensures that low Strength-check rolls cannot undercut the Barbarian's actual Strength score. The class should feel physically dominant in exploration and social pressure, not only after initiative is rolled.
Brutal Critical arrives while crits still matter
Brutal Critical starts at 3rd level instead of arriving deep into the class. That makes the critical-hit fantasy part of Barbarian identity while players are still forming the character's combat loop.
Primal Champion becomes a progression
The largest structural change is Primal Champion. At 6th level, Strength and Constitution each increase by 2 and their maximums become 22. At 10th they increase again and can reach 24. At 14th they increase again and can reach 26. Endless Rage at 20th then adds another +4 to both and raises both maximums to 30 while making Rage unlimited.
This deliberately rewards staying Barbarian. Multiclassing can still be useful, but it now means walking away from enormous physical growth rather than taking most of the class's identity in the opening levels.
Late levels should make you hard to stop
Dauntless helps the Barbarian resist and end frightened or charmed conditions. Persistent Rage prevents ordinary circumstances from ending Rage early. Relentless Rage preserves the classic refusal-to-die fantasy. The result is a high-level Barbarian whose progression is about becoming increasingly difficult to control, frighten, charm, or put down.
Compared with 2024
The 2024 Barbarian does meaningful work to improve Rage usability and broaden the class's turn-to-turn options. 5th Edge takes a more aggressive stance on single-class progression. We want the Barbarian's ability scores, defenses, and physical authority to keep escalating because that escalation is the class fantasy.
A level-20 Barbarian should not feel like a level-5 Barbarian with a larger hit-point total. The body itself should have become legendary.
